摘要:This work assesses the state of human capital development inNigeria with a view to determining the extent to which it cansupport the Nigerian manufacturing sector in achieving theobjectives established for it by the countries policy document, vision202020. It relied on existing (secondary) data to achieve its objectives.Such data were presented in tabular forms and further subjected tographical and statistical analysis. It was found that there is a verystrong positive relationship between human capital development andglobal competitiveness; that mainly as a result of inadequate funding, the state of human capital development in the country must improvesignificantly in order provide the manufacturing sector with thequantity and quality of human capital that will enable it to achieve theobjectives prescribed for it by vision 202020. This work, therefore, recommends that the sector should play a more proactive role inimproving the quality of education in the country. Specifically, theyshould partner with the stakeholders in the education sector to lobbyfor better funding of education using the UNESCO benchmark as areference point, seriously consider establishing a university of its ownwith an academic curriculum that is tailored to the specific humancapital needs of the sector, and endeavour to make its own input intothe academic curriculum of other existing tertiary institutions throughthe National Universities Commission (NUC).
