摘要:Executive functions (EF) are areas of weakness for children with early – and continuously – treated phenylketonuria (ECT-PKU). However, general consensus is still required with regard to the exact executive profile of these children (nature, severity, specificity). In this context, we aimed to provide a more systematic and comprehensive review of the literature than previously reported by examining all the 42 studies published on EF of children with ECT-PKU. We summarized the design of each study in a table, to discuss theoretical and methodological issues across studies. Considering the review of the literature we made, several issues stand out and new research opportunities can be proposed. First of all, it would be helpful to simultaneously use different measures of planning, inhibition, shifting, and working memory, within a developmental and conceptual framework of EF in order to counteract methodological discrepancies. We recommended an integrative approach, in particular to discuss the complex interrelationships between speed of processing and EF. Finally, future investigations will have to focus on understanding the everyday executive functioning. From a clinical point of view, these conceptual and methodological considerations must guide the evaluation of the EF in children with ECT-PKU and are relevant to an improved understanding of neuropsychological impairments in PKU.
