摘要：The semantics of conversion has received growing attention in the past years. A set of semantic patterns used in conversion has been known for decades, but littl e room has been allowed for other variables which shape meaning and which have been described in the l iterature as a resource of word – formation processes. Of these, figurative extension, especially metaphor, is used in conversion, sometimes along with othe r well – known semantic patterns, sometimes alone. This paper reviews the major semantic patterns which are implicit in the term CONVERSION and some of their theoretical implications .
