摘要：This paper is an introduction to the special issue of the first Vertical Geology Conference—VGC-14 which was held at the University of Lausanne in February 2014. The context of the meeting and its goal is presented and a definition and short introduction to the theme of Vertical Geology is given. Finally, the paper introduces all articles contained within this special issue.
