  • 摘要:The purpose of this study is to investigate the strategies that prospective female and male teachers will use to cope with verbal, emotional, physical and sexual violence when they are faced with these forms of violence in the future, and their perceptions of self-competence to cope with violence. The data were collected through questionnaires from 183 female (59.6%) and 124 male (40.4%) students of three universities in Turkey. The study describes, by frequencies and percentages, which coping reactions the prospective teachers would prefer when they encounter verbal, emotional, physical and sexual violence in the future, their perceptions of self-competence in coping with violence. The chi-square test of independence was used to find whether their reactions differ by gender. To cope with violence, female students mostly prefer social support whereas male students tend to disregard violence or react in the same way. The prospective teachers’ level of finding themselves competent in coping with violence also differs by gender. Female students perceive themselves more competent in coping with verbal and emotional violence, while male teachers in coping with physical and sexual violence. The types of violence that prospective teachers think they are likely to encounter most frequently in schools do not show difference by gender.
