摘要：The ethnography os diocesan visitations: a source in the study of population, family and mestizaje in the modern period O artigo busca fazer uma análise das visitações diocesanas e de como operava a lógica das devassas e pastorais eclesiásticas até finais do século XVIII na América Portuguesa. Propõe-se a demonstrar como essa documentação constituiu parte do processo de moralização e ocidentalização que formou a burocracia das sociedades americanas. A partir da crítica historiográfica dessa tipologia documental, a análise foca tanto a questão da alteridade dos grupos sociais, quanto a importância desses registros para o estudo da família e da mestiçagem na formação de diversificada população. It proposes to demonstrate how that documentation was part of the process of moralization and Westernization that formed the bureaucracy of American societies. From the critical historiography of this documental typology, the analysis brings into focus both the question of social groups’ otherness, as the importance of these records for the study of family and mestizaje in the formation of diverse population.
