摘要：Este artigo pretende oferecer uma contribuição ao estudo do casamento no Brasil colonial por meio da análise do que alguns autores escreveram sobre ele. Alguns documentosde cunho eclesiástico permitem analisá-lo além das fronteiras estabelecidas pela norma, ou seja, pela legislação civil e eclesiástica. A penetração no cotidiano das pessoas, possibilitado pelas devassas, pelas averiguações do estado de solteiro dos nubentes, pelas verificações de graus de parentesco, pelos processos de divórcio, etc, abriu um campo muito fértil para conhecermos um pouco a multiplicidade e diversidade da vida na Colônia.
