OBJECTIVE: Describe the prevalence of vitamin A deficiency (VAD) in pregnant adolescent women according to the indicators: functional (gestational night blindness -XN) and dietary (inadequate dietary intake of vitamin A), as well as factors associated with gestational XN. METHODS: Cross-sectional study developed with 303 pregnant teenage mothers (age<20 years), with a single fetus gestation and without chronic diseases, attended at a public maternity hospital in Rio de Janeiro. 76 women were attended in the period 2004-2006, called group I, and 227 attended in the period 2007-2010, called group II. XN was identified through a validated interview. The dietary intake of vitamin A was evaluated by the semi-quantitative consumption frequency method. Multivariate logistic regression was used to identify the factors associated with gestational XN. RESULTS: The prevalence of gestational XN was 13.2% (n = 40). Factor associated with gestational XN in pregnant adolescents was the use of cigarettes and alcohol during pregnancy (OR = 3.94, 95% CI 1.01-15.41). Although was not associated with gestational XN, inadequate intake of vitamin A was observed in 44.1% and 38.1% of adolescents, in the 1st. and 2nd. trimesters, respectively. CONCLUSION: The findings describe a high prevalence of gestational XN and inadequate dietary intake among pregnant adolescents. The investigation of gestational XN should be part of prenatal routines.
