摘要:In the 18th century the Academicians at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid commenced a portrait gallery, the development of which has here been analysed through the use of archival records. The author demonstrates that the corporation began to consider the creation of this gallery in 1774, with the proposal made by the Count of Aguilar. Nevertheless, the collection proved to be rather eclectic and had a secondary role due to its development through private initiative and donations made by the relatives of the Academicians during the second half of the 19th century. This study of the portrait gallery focuses on its beginnings and its consolidation in a proper Portrait Room during the Ancien Régime as an image of academic, corporate identity, as well as being a reflection of the tensions and hierarchical aspirations of its members.
