摘要:In PNAS we report that the symbiotic nitrogen-fixing tree red alder ( Alnus rubra ) accesses more rock-derived nutrients than nonfixing trees (1). We further hypothesize that excess nitrogen fixation by alder, leading to high rates of nitrification and nitric acid generation in soil, could accelerate mineral weathering (1, 2). Krishna et al. (3) seek to provide an alternative explanation for accelerated mineral weathering by the closely related tree Himalayan alder ( Alnus nepalensis ). They invoke cluster roots and rhizosphere exudates as causes of enhanced mineral weathering (3) but provide no supporting evidence, which we have previously addressed (2). The remainder of their comment addresses age-related changes in nitrogen … [↵][1]1To whom correspondence may be addressed.
