摘要:In spite of the visible recovery and recent growth of the Nigerian economy, the welfare of senior citizens seemed to have
missed the attention of development policy planners. This paper seeks to explore the incidence, magnitude, effects,
national and international interventions; and how the observed deficits should influence future policy directions on the
welfare of senior citizens. The source of information for this paper is secondary: archival and literature sources.
Presentational frameworks and perspectives are taken from the millennial development goals (MDGs), sustainable
development goals (SDGs), and the decent work country programme (DWCP), as well as some of the interventions of the
United Nations agencies dedicated to the eradication of poverty. The paper concludes that the welfare deficits for senior
citizens continues to grow, ironically with the recent growth of the economy; and that this contradiction is undesirable
calling for a more effective and sustainable social protection system.
