摘要：The function of transportation in the socio-economic development of nations cannot be undervalued. Efficient transport system has become a modern strategy for ensuring sustainability in advanced countries, but less developed concept among developing nations such as Ghana, hence attracts fewer research interests and applications.This paper aims to promote the development of sustainable freight transport system in developing economies with insight from Ghana.The study examines the existing freight transport system situation and propose strategies that can promote national sustainable freight transport development. The researchers adopted literature review and other subjective techniques; personal knowledge and brainstorming of transport practitioners and experts. It was discovered that Ghana has most relevant multimodal and transport resources butare not integrated to enjoy intermodal transport benefits. Surprisingly, the existing freight transport system depends on road-only and is challenged with greenhouse gases, congestions, accidents, service deficiencies and cost-inefficiencies. Among the problems arelack of skilful labor, limited infrastructure and institutional policies, transport network & connectivity problems, safety and security issues. Some suitable strategies and useful measures to improve the transport system to ensure sustainability are underscored. Among them are; Training institutions and transport organizations should be equipped to strengthen human resources. Government should reform transport institutional policies to attract investors and Public Private Partnership for collaborations in developing intermodal transport and logistics systems.
