摘要:The article studies the relation between the brick industry and urbanization in the southeastern sector of Bogotá during the first decades of the 20th century. Ever since Colonial times, artisanal production of bricks and tiles had been carried out in San Cristóbal, since it had the resources necessary for such activity. Towards the end of the 19th century, some modern factories appeared in the area, featuring industrial, coal-fueled ovens and employing salaried workers. By the decade of the 20s, the number of factories had increased, without, however, managing to displace artisanal production. New neighborhoods integrated to Bogotá began to be built in the area of San Cristóbal, thus transforming the sector into one of the capital's urban growth hubs. The objective of this article is to understand the importance of brick production in the history of the southeastern part of the city. Although San Cristóbal had essential resources to satisfy the needs of an expanding city, such as potable water and available land, which attracted urban developers, the existence of both modern brick factories and artisanal producers had a concrete influence on the urbanization process in that part of the city..
