摘要:In conversations with farmers, plant breeders talkabout breeding better varieties through crossing linesor varieties in order to create better versions. But thoseconversations don’t do justice to the complicated processof plant breeding, which is full of specialized terms andadvanced scientific technology. As a statistical geneticist who works closely with plantbreeders, I’m committed to developing cutting-edge statistical methods that advance genomic research towardthe sustainability of food production. In our researchcollaborations, I know how easy it is for academics toget lost in our own language. But, for farmers who takethe time to more fully understand the process leading tobetter crop varieties, their reward is a greater capacity formaking informed and successful planning decisions.
