摘要:This article proposes the concept of media repertoires as an instrument to overcome two challenges for research on media use: On the one hand it stresses the fact that individual patterns of media use include a composition of different media and that the way how the components of these repertoires are interrelated is a key to understanding people’s media use. On the other hand it provides a conceptual framework that allows integrating quantitative and qualitative empirical work and thus overcoming the gap between large scale quantitative research on media use and small scale qualitative research on the subjective meaning of particular practices. This is demonstrated by a project on patterns of media use in Germany that combined a quantitative and qualitative part. Findings show how this kind of approach can provide a rich basis for understanding today’s media related practices.
