摘要：Eritrea — located in Northeast Africa — coversa surface area of 117 600 km2. The country has along stretch of coastline along the Red Sea to thenortheast, across from which are Saudi Arabia and Yemen.Sudan is to the west, Ethiopia to the south and Djiboutito the southeast (above figure). The Red Sea region, withits multiple ports, especially the major ports of Assab andMassawa, is economically vital to the country. Part of theEast African Rift System, the area also has high potentialfor geothermal energy development and mineral waterexploitation. Sustainable water management is regarded asa priority in this region, as it is a major basis for socioeconomicdevelopment. The main aquifers in the areaare primarily located in Quaternary alluvial deposits andvesicular basalt flows originating from volcano massifs.
