摘要：The four countries overlying the Guarani AquiferSystem (GAS), located primarily in the Paraná riverbasin, have made great advances recently in creatinga management framework for this important aquifer. Atover 1.2 million sq km and estimated to contain 37 000 cukm of water, this groundwater body is the largest in SouthAmerica and one of the world’s largest aquifer systems. Ithas the potential to sustainably supply about 360 millionpeople, and currently supplies about 15 million in theregion; the population of overlying countries Argentina,Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay is collectively over 242million.
