摘要:The Roman Empire is a defining example of us versus theem ’meintality:insiders 1er:sus outsiders;' citizens against barbariams. Within archaeologicalthought, the idea of "Romanization has been used for decades, but its limitingimplications have been acknonvledged. The terms binary, asumptions negatethe agency of native populations as being overpowered by Roman cuthoriy andthis bias is only slow/y being corrected. This phenomenon is especially notablewhen researching the Roman frontie; a space betveen the Roman citizen andbarbarian other: How do 1e understand the history of this riolently chargedmilitary zone? How does it differ. from understanding it as a vital, transitivearea of cultural interaction? Roman mentality regarding the might of Romecan be found in ancient texts, coin imagery; amd momumental schemes but theseartifacts refect the Roman bias. This paper highlights the ises of investigatingnon-Roman material, principal]y pottery;and so calls forth an ofen-ignoredperspective, the native perspective. Archaeologists must understand the bias ofamcient authors amd recogmize the neglectof *modernresearccherswho. fail to acknowledge native agency under the veil of "Romanization. ”The province ofDacia, in modern Romamia, provides a fascinating case study that illuminatesthe bias of interpretation and its effects on modern mis-interpretations of theregion s shifting cultural identity.
