摘要:For the :2017-18academic yearandthrough the help of the IEMA researchgrant,I was fortunateenough to travelto the University of Exeter in Devon,England to work alongside Dr. IoanaOltean. My research focuses on thefrontier environment and defenses of oneof the most turbulent and active regionsof the late Roman Empire, the provinceof Scythia Minor, located in southeastRomania. Especially in the、wake ofnumerous contemporary events such asthe Syrian migration crisis and the suddenexit of Britain from the European Union, the focus on national borders and bordercontrol has never been greater. Frontiers, both present and ancient, act as dynamicareas of cultural interaction where goods, ideas, and populations are exchangedbut also regulated and controlled. Whiletheories sSUITOunnding the definition 8and .role of frontiers can be seen to partiallyoriginate from those of the former BritishEmpire, these concepts have since beenexpanded andapplied to a number ofother cultures.
