It starts by discussing the complex and unclear epistemic status of the concept of corruption. Then it briefly reviews the different types of data used to estimate levels of corruption. The next section examines major recognized indicators and indexes. Finally, some of their specific qualities are analyzed to show their limitations and the mistakes made by inappropriate use of these instruments.
