摘要:In Norway in the 19 th and 20 th centurythe consumption of liquor formed the basis for a peculiar politicalculture manifested in restrictive alcohol legislation in combinationwith a strong temperance movement. A restrictive alcohol culturein a country where the alcohol consumption was low in comparison withother countries in Europe at that time is in this article perceivedas a paradox. The article investigates how drinking habits werepracticed among the elites and common people in rural and urbanareas in the county of Telemark and concludes that drinking habitsin Telemark in the 19 th century confirm the impressionof Telemark as divided. In the rural and western part of the countypopular drinking habits and practices were maintained. People seemedto express a mentality in which maintenance of traditions, habitsand practices was valued. A premise for social and cultural acceptancewas to sustain the norms and values that old practices represented.
