摘要:In shopping centres, boundaries between public andprivate spaces are often blurred. In this article, theinterpretations of appropriate ways to use spaceare discussed by analysing both formal and informalregulations considering young people’s hanging out.The Kamppi shopping centre, located in the city centreof Helsinki, is used as a case in this research. Theempirical material consists of young people’s interviews, researchers’ observations and of some interviewsconducted with representatives of the shoppingcentre and the police. Young people’s presencehas caused confrontations between the surveillancepersonnel and the young people themselves. In thisarticle, visible means to exclude certain people fromthe shopping centre are investigated and some morehidden codes of conduct are analysed. Strategiesof exclusion have been justified by the size of thecrowds of young people, the noise they make andthe space they take from other people. The articleis concluded by raising questions of young people’sposition in the contemporary society where theirfree mobility and their independent use of spaceare often problematic. Hanging out challenges theidea of scheduling young people’s free time. By doingso, it also highlights the meaning of social interactionin the process of identity construction in youngpeople’s lives.
