摘要：Since 1990s alternative modes of tourism havebecome important and visible in Western tourismmarkets, and nowadays there is a growing interestin ethnic and indigenous tourism. The utilization ofindigenous people and other cultural minoritiesraises questions of how they are used in tourismproducts, practices and how they are depicted inplace promotion. This article focuses on the latterissue by analysing the representations of indigenouspeople in tourism promotion in Namibia. Articlereviews the problematic connections betweenplace promotion, representations and indigenoustourism and discusses historical representations ofAfrica and its people in tourism promotion. The casestudy analyses the representations of Ovahimbas,indigenous group living in northwestern Namibia.The article argues that the current touristic imagesof Ovahimbas and their living environment arehistorically linked to colonial depictions and thecolonial era of discovering Africa. Further the articleaims to manifest that the current representationsof Ovahimbas produce and reproduce the colonialdiscourses by creating fantasies of modernexplorations and discoveries.
