摘要:During the war years in Finland (from 1939 to 1945)around 70 000–80 000 Finnish children were sentto foster families in Sweden, Denmark and Norway. The years abroad had an enormous effect on thesechildren’s sense of belonging to community andplace. In this article I focus on the sense of placeamong Finnish war children. Sense of place developsthrough lived experiences of spatiality, particularly ofeveryday places. In war children’s case several forceddisplacements created fractions in experiencing spatialityand everyday places. To capture the multidimensionalityof experiential place, I utilise theoreticaldiscussions of politics of place and geography ofkhora. In other words, I discuss how sense of placeis formed through conscious and unconscious processes.Jacques Derrida’s one interpretation of khorais a half-way-place, which is midway between spaceand time. I suggest that the unconscious processesof war children’s sense of place can be partly viewedas a half-way-place. Empirically, my aim is to trace thesecondary impressions of khora‘s half-way-place.
