O surgimento da novela de folhetim foi um fator determinante na evolução do melodrama e o antecedente mais remoto de uma das articulações básicas do desenvolvimento da indústria cinematográfica: o valor do produto segundo a demanda do mercado. Ao longo da História, melodrama e folhetim confundiram-se para assumir as mais diversas formas segundo a tecnologia vigente em cada época. Hoje, sua residência mais natural parece ser a televisão, mas será que nada mudou em sua estrutura?
