Neste sentido, existe uma relação dependente do intelecto em relação à Vontade. Esta aparece frente ao psiquismo como a manifestação de um querer inconsciente, e, a partir disso, define-se o intelecto como coisa física e consciente, em contraste com a Vontade, que é metafísica e inconsciente. A racionalidade é um aspecto do psiquismo humano e não seu fundamento. Mais fundamental é a intuição intelectual proporcionada pelo entendimento, que realmente capta e dá forma ao mundo, através das formas básicas a priori do tempo, do espaço, e da causalidade. Ao fundo das intuições intelectuais e das abstrações conceituais, no entanto, estão aspectos afetivos, que efetivamente direcionam o intelecto e determinam o posicionamento psíquico frente à efetividade.
