A diferença entre uma coisa e outra resulta no fator que impele os impulsos rumo aos seus destinos “dessexualizados”. Estes possibilitam formas de aprimoramento da linguagem e produção de bens culturais que resultam no processo civilizatório, capitalizando as forças da sexualidade e as redirecionando para alvos socialmente produtivos. Por isso, toda atividade humana é sempre sexualizada em algum grau e visa satisfação. Mas, no caso de Schopenhauer acontece o mesmo? O filósofo da Vontade utiliza dois termos: sublimação ("Sublimierung"), que esclarece um processo de conversão, sutilização e embelezamento das representações, embora não seja feita nenhuma tentativa de sistematização diretamente como destino de impulso. Esta noção é complementada pelo conceito de sublime ("Erhabenen") presente especialmente na metafísica do belo ("Metaphysik des Schönen"), que caracteriza o homem como “ímpeto tempestuoso e obscuro do querer”, que tem a polaridade “dos órgãos genitais como seu foco”, e simultaneamente o contraste da polaridade do cérebro, que na linguagem do filósofo representa o “sujeito eterno, livre, sereno, do puro conhecer.”.
