标题：A fauna americana sob ataque: as duas ondas de impacto da presença humana sobre a fauna do continente americano e um pequeno debate sobre a questão dos direitos dos animais em nossos dias
摘要：É cada vez maior a necessidade de se abordar questões da atualidade através de uma perspectiva arqueológica assim como se torna cada vez maior o interesse dos arqueólogos em expandirem seus horizontes epistemológicos ao abordarem temas da atualidade. Neste artigo tratamos de um tema que está se tornando cada vez mais presente na sociedade brasileira: a luta pelos direitos dos animais. Partimos dos estudos a respeito da extinção da megafauna no continente americano, apresentando um amplo conjunto de teorias sobre este assunto. Depois discutimos as questões relacionadas aos impactos do avanço da pecuária sobre a fauna nativa do Brasil e sobre as paisagens naturais brasileiras. Concluímos este artigo mostrando que o atual ritmo de consumo de produtos de origem animal, principalmente carne, constitui séria ameaça à fauna brasileira. Abstract: There is an increasing necessity to study questions of the actuality through an archaeological perspective as there is an increasing desire of the archaeologists in expanding their epistemological horizons in studying current themes. In this article, we discuss a theme that is becoming more present in the Brazilian society: the fight for animal rights. We start with the studies about the extinction of the megafauna in the American continent, showing a wide set of theories about this issue. After we discuss the questions related to the impacts of the progress of the big herds above the Brazilian native fauna and above the natural Brazilian landscapes. We conclude this article showing that the current rhythm of consumption of animal products, mainly meat, constitutes a serious threat to the Brazilian fauna.
