This article deals with the evolution of the idea of medieval poverty and its religious, economic and social connotations. The methodology used has taken into account a thorough bibliographical search, the use of existing published sources as well as relevant archival research. Given that the subject of poverty in the Middle Ages is not new, we have taken into consideration the scholarship carried out in various Western European countries from the nineteen-seventies, when studies in this area soared, until the nineties, allowing us to establish a comparative history with the existing literature. The objective of this article is to reconsider the evolution of poverty in the late Middle Ages and specifically in the Mediterranean realm of the Crown of Aragón. This will allow us to establish the historical turning points which consequently triggered a change in concept, in spiritual mentality and in the behaviour of both the ruling and lower classes.
