摘要：A organização do conhecimento em arquivos está centrada, especialmente, nas atividades de classificação e descrição arquivísticas. Esse é um processo que consiste na análise, síntese e representação dos conjuntos documentais objetivando controle e acesso. Esse relato de experiência discute a importância da contextualização nesse processo. Partindo de exercícios práticos realizados no âmbito da disciplina de Descrição Arquivística, são apresentadas as pesquisas necessárias para que a documentação fosse compreendida e permitisse que a representação fosse feita. Configura-se em uma pesquisa qualitativa, descritiva, de caráter bibliográfico e documental. Os documentos analisados e descritos constituem o acervo digital do fotógrafo Sebastião Salgado, que desenvolve um trabalho fotográfico que busca suscitar inquietações, com reconhecimento internacional. Conclui que a pesquisa, visando a contextualização, é fundamental no processo de descrição arquivística, essa necessidade é potencializada quando tratamos de fotografias, que apresentam um grau mais elevado de subjetividade.

centered, especially, in the activities of
classification and archival description. This is a
process that consists of the analysis, synthesis
and representation of the documentary sets
aiming at control and access. This experience
report discusses the importance of
contextualization in this process. Starting from
practical exercises carried out within the
discipline of Archival Description, the necessary
research is presented so that the documentation
is understood and allows the representation to
be made. It is configured in an experience report
developed through bibliographical and
documentary research. The documents analyzed
and described constitute the digital collection of
the photographer called Sebastião Salgado, who
develops a photographic work that seeks to
arouse concern, with international recognition.
It concludes that research, aiming at
contextualization, is fundamental in the process
of archival description, this need is potentialized
when we deal with photographs, which present
a higher degree of subjectivity.
