Ensemble playing, improvisation and creative work, as well as communication with an emphasis on listening and dialogue, are important aims in the new Curriculum Framework for Schools of Music and Performing Arts: Diversity and Deeper Understanding (The Norwegian Council for Schools of Music and Performing Arts, 2016). Pedagogical methods used to achieve the objectives described in the outline should consist of diverse learning activities and emphasises a variation in working methods as a key to learning. In this article, the authors discuss the potential of the sign language system Soundpainting as a tool related to the goals in the curriculum to “learn, experience, create and convey cultural and artistic expressions”. Considering the concepts of dialogism and musical negotiation, the authors look specifically at the diversity of Soundpainting as a method for both expression and teaching. With examples from research on Soundpainting, the authors argue for a wider range of teaching methods, especially in interactive and improvisational education in cultural schools, in order to provide a sound foundation for educating open, creative and brave musicians.
