摘要:Internalized stigma has been identified as an issue that causes significant harm to the population with mental illness. Investigations in this area are important, especially in the development of instruments, which can provide advances in clinical and academic knowledge. This study aimed to translate and adapt the Internalized Stigma of Mental Illness (ISMI) scale to the Brazilian context. The translation and cultural adaptation consisted of five stages: translation of the original instrument, synthesis of translation, back translation, expert committee review and pretest self-assessment. The Brazilian version of ISMI-BR was semantically equivalent to the original and culturally appropriate for the Brazilian reality. The scale was easy to use and the items were understood properly by the participants. The ISMI-BR was shown to be suitable for psychometric analyses.
