摘要:This research is a preliminary study that aims to describe the algebraic thinking process of seventh grade students at MTs Surya Buana Malang. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. Subjects are grouped into three categories,namely high,medium and low math abilities. Data were obtained based on the results of tests analyzed based on the students' algebraic thinking process. The results of this study indicate that students often experience difficulties in obtaining information from the given questions so that students have difficulty in predicting patterns and chunking information. The contributing factor is that students are not familiar with the types of non-routine questions. In addition,students also experience difficulties in explaining the rules to determine or look for the next pattern. The contributing factor is the lack of students' ability to represent what is known into mathematical models (equations and pictures),the use of mathematical symbols,and algebraic operations. Difficulties experienced by students affect students in describing or explaining change and justifying rules based on other representations.
