  • 摘要:ESS standards There is no doubt that methodological standards of ESS produce one of the highest response rate in the European context and work well in different cultural settings. This actually increases the comparability of the data achieved by different countries. For these purposes certain fieldwork procedures in ESS were prepared by Central Coordinating Team (CCT),namely:a) Procedures focused on respondents - advanced letters, timing and mode of calls, respondent incentives, conversion of initial refuse.b) Procedures focused on interviewers - selection, briefing, workload, payment.c) Procedures focused on fieldwork organization - close monitoring, quality control back-checks,length of fieldwork period. In this part we would like to draw your attention to the concrete adaptation of these procedures to our cultural settings.Despite the fact, that our commentary follows these procedures separately,it seems to be clear, that there are deep interconnections between them.Timing Despite the fact, that in our setting we approached relatively low level of non-contacts,interviewer frequently criticised accessibility of some respondents.Contrary to previous experience of higher probability to contact respondent in the evening, the interviewers were not able to find respondent because of the dark.It usually happened in the country-side where the quality of streetlight and address labelling was insufficient. The second negative side effect of evening visits in rural area reported by interviewers was the significant accumulation of verbal and behavioural expressions of mistrust 30 (including setting a dog on “poor interviewer"in one case).
