摘要：The general aim of this research is to describe the different characteristics of pragmatically language use involving gender approach. The specific aims of this research are focused to describe the differences of language use of the forms of utterances between male and female leaders in official meeting discourse in Surakarta government. Qualitative method with case study strategy is used in this research. The sources of data cover all individuals leading institutions of eselon IV - II,offices,branch offices and institutions in Surakarta government who were determined by purposive sampling and criterion based selection. The data of the research were utterances used by male and female leaders in official meeting discourse. The data were collected by applying recording technique,note-taking,observation,and cooperation with informant. The data were analyzed by using extensional analysis referring to pragmatic analysis focused on means-end and heuristic analysis. The results of the research show that the utterances used by female leaders in official meetings tend to be expressive,commiserate,and rogative,but male leaders’ utterances tend to be directive. The expressive and commiserate utterances used by female leaders are used to please someone else and they are less competitive because they do not refer to the speakers’ needs but to listeners’. Whereas directive utterances of male leaders tend to be confrontative and competitive and refer more on the speakers’ needs rather than listeners’. Rogative utterances used by female leaders tend to be in the forms of questioning since they are afraid if their choice is wrong or less acceptable to listeners with the technique of indirect non-literal. The rogative utterances of male leaders,however,tend to be in the forms of asking about something directly literal,rational,and to the point..
