摘要：By definition, a rite of passage is the collective ritual marking the change of social and sexual status of an individual. It usually comprises a ceremony and various other practices. The most important rites of passage concern birth, puberty, marriage and burial. All are present in Charles de Coster’s Legend (1867) and they are all profane, because the author was dominated by anti-clericalism. His initiation to Freemasonry added to this. Initiation rites may or may not be related to the rites of passage. The rite of passage is distinguished by the fact that it marks a step in the life of an individual, while the rite of initiation marks the incorporation of an individual in a social or religious group.
