摘要:The rituals of death are cultural products engendered by the tied relationship between culture and death. They are also social instruments meant to cope with the discontinuity introduced into the community by the deceased. The present paper aims at analysing the representation of death rituals in two novels, one belonging to William Faulkner (As I lay dying, 1930) and the other to Graham Swift (Last Orders, 1996), revealing the complexity of the death of the Other, the existence of an aesthetic ritualization of Death and also of a ritual content that differs, despite the uniformity of death rituals, from character to character. A special topic is dedicated to the comparison between corpse and ashes and the rituals they impose.
