摘要:One of the biggest challenges faced by most of the European Union countries is the aging of societies due to the decline in the number of births and the extension of life expectancy. The slowdown in demographic development contributes to the reduction of labour resources, which is reflected in the declining turnover ratio of potential labour resources. The change in the demographic structure of societies is a threat to public finances and economies of many countries. The increase in the professional activity of older people is a way to meet the challenges of adverse changes in human resources. The aim of the publication is to discuss the changes that occur in the professional activity of older people 2006 between 2016 in selected Eastern European countries: in Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Romania and Hungary. This publication relies on Eurostat and OECD data. Empirical data was analyzed with measures of descriptive statistics, demographic measures, indices concerning the labor market. The analysis shows that between 2006–2016 the unemployment rates have gradually decreased in the studied countries and the employment rates of people aged 55–64 have been increasing. Among the analyzed countries, Poland deserves particular attention, in which the employment rate increased by 18 percentage points and the unemployment rate decreased by 4 percent. points. The increase in the professional activity of the elderly is related to the implemented pension system reform as well as the activation activities carried out.
