摘要:Food security exists when all people at all times have physical and economic access to safe food. Food safety is an integral part of food quality and refers both to the risk of food contamination and to the effects of food fraud, including food falsification. Food quality labels are one of the possible ways to ensure food safety, and – if other conditions are met – to enable food security. The purpose of this paper is to present the role of food quality labels in ensuring food safety for Polish consumers. This will be done by identifying the recognition of quality labels among food purchasers. The paper presents an overview of food quality labels used in Poland and the results of an awareness survey conducted with Polish consumers. In this study, only half of the 12 food quality labels used in Poland were found to designate safe products of a particular health quality. As a consequence, if food quality labels are intended to ensure food safety, it is necessary for buyers to know which symbols designate food quality and which ones only refer to their sensory values or availability. It was proved that consumer awareness of food quality labels is insufficient to make them a part of food safety.
