摘要:The purpose of this research is to develop a scale to assess the attitudes of prospective teachers towards free writing. Prospective teachers’ attitudes towards writing are important in that they will form a model for their students. Free writing contributes to individuals and thus to the society in many areas such as self-expression and organizing thoughts. The limitation of this study is that the sample consists of students from the faculties of education of Gazi University and BozokUniversity. In order to determine the factor loadings of the items in the Scale to Assess the Free Writing Attitudes of Faculty of Education Students and for structural validity, factor analysis was carried out (Büyüköztürk, 2011). At the end of the factor analysis, for the 19-item scale the KMO value was 0.732, and the Bartlett test result was χ2= 4143.706 (p ≤. 05). These values show that the data to be obtained through the scale are fit to be subject to factor analysis. As for reliability of the scale, the Cronbach Alpha coefficients were measured. The Cronbach Alpha coefficient of the scale’s Contribution to Personal Development dimension was 0.88, for the dimension of Development of Free Writing it was 0,83, and it was 0,73 for the dimension of Outer World. The total Cronbach Alpha coefficient of the scale was 0,88. In the reliability analysis done based on these values, it was determined that all subscales and the scale itself were reliable. This scale was developed based on the hypotheses that prospective teachers did not have moderate opinions toward free writing, were experiencing problems planning their thoughts, were not aware that they would improve their ability for expression through free writing, did not devote time for writing activities when making use of their free times, and the like. Suggestions about the gains prospective teachers would have through free writing were made based on the findings and interpreting the discussion section. It is believed that the scale which was developed in this study by doing the necessary analyses will make a contribution to the field in terms of written expression.
