摘要:The purpose of this study is to investigate the attitudes and motivations of secondary school students towards reading in terms of various variables and to determine the relationship between the students’ attitudes towards reading and their motivations for reading. Quantitative research design was adopted in the study and the relational survey model was used. The sample consisted of a total of 767 students in the 6th, 7th and 8th grades of secondary schools in the Erzurum, Samsun, Kahramanmaraş and Muş provinces in the spring semester of the 2018-2019 academic year. In the study, the "Attitude towards Reading in Secondary Schools" scale, developed by Özbay and Uyar (2009) and the "Motivation for Reading Texts" scale, developed by Aydemir and Öztürk (2013) were used as the data collection tools. The data obtained from the research were analyzed, conducting parametric tests by using the SPSS v.25 software. The results showed that the reading attitudes and reading motivations of secondary school students showed significant differences in terms of the variables of gender, grade, family income level, availability of a library at home, the number of books read in a year and the presence of a member of the household who read books. Furthermore, it was determined that there was a high level positive relationship between the students’ attitudes towards reading and their motivations for reading.
