摘要：Sustainable land use is an important role for urban existency. Land use that exceeds its capability will damage. Land capability to provide food and water sustainably is a problem in urban development amid the growing trend of urban population. This research purpose to analyze the carring capacity of Lewoleba -capital of Lembata distric- East Nusatenggara, by assessing the land capability at sub-class level, evaluating actual land use with land capability class, analyzing actual land potential to produce food and water for the people’s need. The land capability assessment was conducted by superimposing the land physical criteria. Evaluation of actual land suitability was conducted by comparing land capability class to actual land use. The ability of land to provide food and water needs was calculated by comparing it with food and water needs. The result of this research showed the land capability of Lewoleba dominated by high land capability class. Actual land use was aligned to its capability, but the land needed to food production surpass the urban land potential. The water balance was deficit. Thus Lewoleba urban area base on the land capability for food dan water production was not sustainable. So the design of Lewoleba needs to prevent potential land for agriculture in flat areas, also needs to increase the utilization of food resources in the bay of Lewoleba. The availability of water can be sufficient if the potential of rainwater can be harvested before evaporated.
