摘要:Nowadays, steel structures are more and more specifically designed with the application of modern approaches in order to obtain cost-effective, yet “sufficiently” reliable structures. Among several existing approaches for a design of the steel structures, which are developed to provide their cost-effectiveness, one of the most important is the concept of semi-rigid joints. Present work summarizes the specific measures related to the design of more economical steel structures, and the priority is given to the usage of a modern concept with the semi-rigid joints. This concept, although on the first hand requires more knowledge and time concerning the design, allows on the other hand considerable savings in the material and labour required to produce the most common steel structures – the steel frames. In order to quantify the above mention rationalisation, a comparison between the applications of traditional and modern approach on the particular example of the hall with double hinge frame bearing system is investigated. The focus of this article is upon the results of the frame analysis with a more realistic simulation of the joints behaviour and their influence on the behaviour of the steel frame. As expected, while saving material in usage, the largest saving achieved is just the price of human labour, which is more and more one of the primary goals of modern design. Finally, from the perspective of obtained results it is clearly indicated that the designers, who want to be competitive, must adopt theoretically and practically the existing knowledge about modern approaches offered by the European standards.
