摘要：This contribution maps the place of mathematics in the life and work of Johannes Hudde. In his youth
he made important contributions to the new geometry of the seventeenth century. As administrator
of Amsterdam he made his expertise useful to urban affairs. Mainly in a general sense of an ‘esprit
geometrique’, a rational, unifying approach to such problems as water management.
