摘要：Este artigo discute as políticas lingüísticas do Estado para os povos indígenasbrasileiros desde a época da colonização até o presente momento. Mostracomo algumas dessas políticas têm-se dado através da educação, mas questionaesse procedimento, tendo em vista a questão das terras indígenas, intrinsecamenterelacionada à manutenção e vitalização das línguas indígenas. Chama aatenção para o papel dos lingüistas nesse processo.
