摘要:The aim of this research is to understand and analyze maternal death through the social representations of healthcare professionals in Ribeirão Preto-SP.When we look at hospital work environment, we found that it has a functionalist task execution. Therefore, the of one patient, the professionals already know in advance what they shoud to, and timing of such work will be broken if a death occurs because, this environment is characterized be focused on situations to promote life, not death. We used a qualitative approach. We opted for the content analysis and social representations. We used the semi-structure’s technique and free observation. The sample consisted of seventeen health professionals. In the interviewees speeches note that the definition “unacceptable” to maternal death emerged from social representations. The concept of these interviewees about life and death, from the perspective of mere biological existence, make the presence of death is an experience unacceptable.Maternal death imposes limits on actions taken by health professionals, and makes them to think about the others components that may contribute the occurrence of death.Technological advances, the institutionalization of labor and increased coverage in antenatal care were not sufficient to reduce maternal mortality in Ribeirão Preto. There are probably other ways to get to meet the woman who will really change this picture, i.e.assistance that seek to establish relationship where women can actively participate in this service and that professionals seize to act beyond the biological, the look health-disease process in its context and cultural psychosocial.
