摘要:Friction ridge impressions are unique marks able to individualize and play an important role in identifying people for civil and criminal purposes. In the criminal sphere, the thorough analysis of such marks can reveal not only the source, but also additional information that may be useful in elucidating the facts and in criminal prosecution. The exploitation of this additional information is not a common practice among experts in forensic identification and curricula of vocational training courses in the area do not allow for such possibilities, being restricted to the pursuit of the source. The method that guides the article consists of bibliographic research and presentation of pertinent examples to the discussion as well as the study of a real case.To illustrate the methodology to be used in the analysis of friction ridge impressions and intrinsic and extrinsic details of impressions that should be considered, a simple experiment where fingerprints were collected systematically in order to generate identical images was performed. All obtained fingerprints showed enough disagreement to conclude that they were not copies of the same image, but have been originated from the same source through distinct collections.Forensic science practitioners must be aware of that and act with initiative, creativity and innovation to explore the whole fingerprint data source.
