摘要：For proper diagnosis and treatment in the emergency department, it is often necessary to know if the condition of the patient can be explained by intoxication with any exogenous agent.Thus, the toxicological analysis is conducted when the patient presents with a history of symptomatic, ingestion of substance or when medical staff need a differential diagnosis.Generally, the blood represents the array of choice for these analyzes because the toxic and pharmacological effects can be, in most cases, correlated with the concentration of the analyte in the body.The objective of this study was the determination of ethanol in samples patients seen by the poison control center of the city of São Paulo.Of the total samples analyzed (n = 151), 31 showed positive results for ethanol, being 25 of these with alcohol level exceeding 0.5 g L-1.In this study we applied the method for determination of ethanol in blood and concluded the sample preparation technique used is relatively cheap, quick and easy, which confirms the applicability of the method in the toxicological analysis of emergency.
