摘要：“A Nova Geração,” published in December 1879 in the Revista Brasileira, is among the best-known and most substantive works of literary criticism written by Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis (1839-1908). Beyond its treatment of a heterogeneous group of mostly forgotten Brazilian poets, the essay’s interest lies in its articulation of ideas that would preoccupy Machado as a mature writer. This updated English translation makes this signature work available to new groups of readers.
