The implementation of undergraduate distance learning programs in Mathematics and Physics in 2005, at the Federal University of Santa Catarina, brought about concerns related to quality and excellence in distance education, resulting in the need of a systematized practice of evaluation. Thus, along with the work of the groups planning the programs, a committee was instituted, encompassing the Education, Mathematics and Physics Departments. An evaluation design was worked out and put into practice since then. The design has as its main idea the integration of evaluation and research areas, asserting the accomplishment of the quantitative and qualitative dimensions of the programs. The purpose of this article is to present, discuss and analyze the evaluation and research design which, up to this moment, has guided the studies related to the implementation of the distance learning bachelor programs.
